Having joined YFS for a screenwriting course in 2019, this is K Zar Hlyan’s first experience of fiction filmmaking though she has worked on a number of independent documentaries. May Thyn Kyi won an award at California’s Tiburon Film Festival for her short documentary about vulnerable female migrant workers, Shifting Sands. Yadanar Oo recently directed the Goethe Competition documentary Life is Salty!, about the tough lives of salt workers in the Ayeyarwady Delta. Yè Naing Oo provided the impressive cinematography for the film as well as Theint Mon Soe’s documentary All We Need is a Little Breath. Zau Myit Ding is another YFS student making his name as a cameraman, for example in Mi Ni Ni Aung’s Goethe Competition documentary Black Lady Sings. The latter film was edited by Thida Swe who also edited Phone Myat Hein's delightful portrait of a maverick bookseller in Ohn Saw's Bookshop.
